Beck's hypocrisy knows no bounds

Home Disclaimer Contents For Glenn Beck Share This URL
It's been pointed out here many times that Glenn Beck complains about other people or media organizations for doing exactly what he does. That, of course, is hypocrisy, a character flaw that his followers either ignore, dismiss or cannot detect. He demonstrated blatant hypocrisy again this week when he pointed his finger at MSNBC for editing of the video tape of Neil Heslin, father of a victim in the Sandy Hook elementary school massacre, testifying before Connecticut legislative hearing. The original segment from the Martin Bashir Show will be offered, along with Beck's reaction from his website, evidence of Beck's own selective editing of an Obama presser and the update from MSNBC.

Via MSNBC was this from Jan 28th:

Clearly, the video was edited; but check out Beck's response. Via his website:

Glenn certainly thought Bashir has selectively edited the tape to serve his story.
“Martin Bashir’s story is how rude this audience was and how they started to heckle him,” Glenn said. “They haven’t heckled. They haven’t said anything. Martin Bashir, liar.”
In the clip that aired on Bashir’s program, the audience was shown to be maliciously yelling out pro-second amendment remarks as he is talking about why people need to have assault weapons. But in reality, the remarks came when he asked the audience a direct question.
“I ask if there is anyone who is in this room that can give me one reason or challenge this question: Why anybody in this room needs to have done of these assault-style weapons or military weapons or high capacity clips?” Neil Heslin asked. After a pause he said, “Not one person can answer the question.”
Only after this comment did some in the audience vocalize their support of the Second Amendment. “The Second Amendment shall not be infringed,” one man yelled.
"One man yelled." That's not heckling? But worse, "They haven’t said anything. Martin Bashir, liar.” It's rather evident that gun control opponents DID say something, so who is the liar here? An honest debate can be had about whether Heslin was heckled, but not over the fact that Glenn Beck selectively edited tape when he was on Fox. The best proof of this can be found at News Hounds in a piece from July 4, 2010 entitled "Glenn Beck's Populist Slight of Hand" by Democritus. That same deceitful edit was covered by a Mormon blogging about Mr. Beck in a piece entitled "Context 2," and here on this blog.

hypocrite needs to stop pointing his finger at others

What MSNBC did was wrong. According to the Huffington Post, "MSNBC spokeswoman Lauren Skowronski did not immediately address questions about why MSNBC made the changes or whether criticism that it was misleading is valid." Whether someone will be held responsible at MSNBC or not remains unclear, but no one ever held Beck or anyone at Fox responsible for his deceitful editing of Obama's presser in Canada in 2010.

Bashir was out sick two days later, but substitute anchor, Ari Melber, said Bashir had made note of questions about whether Heslin had been heckled. MSNBC then played an unedited video of the passage in question. Via MSNBC:

At least MSNBC responded to the apparent lapse in journalistic standards. At Fox in 2010? Not so much. Continue to count on Glenn Beck for anti-progressive, deceitful propaganda with no journalistic, or any other kind of, standards what-so-ever.

Chris Matthews addresses Beck's influence in the Republican Party

Home Disclaimer Contents For Glenn Beck Share This URL
On his show this week, Hardball with Chris Matthews, the host discussed the division in the Republican Party between moderate Republicans and Tea Party extremists. One of the examples that Matthews brought up in his discussion with former RNC chairman, Micheal Steele and National Review's Robert Costa, is Glenn Beck who recently pronounced the Republican Party as "dead."

Via MSNBC, watch this discussion.

Is Glenn Beck actually participating in the "murder" of the Republican Party? In 2011, Beck declared his "hatred" for the Republican Party. Steele refused to return that sentiment, but as this division in the Party between the moderate conservatives and the Limbaugh/Hannity/Beck misinformed extremists plays out, it will be interesting to see if the moderates can do what David Brook was suggesting in his op-ed piece. Can the Republican Party reinvent itself as the Party of Eisenhower, or will it continue to be the "stupid Party" of Beck, Limbaugh and Hannity?

Eliot Spitzer and Glenn Beck debated during election

Home Disclaimer Contents For Glenn Beck Share This URL
One of the criticisms of Glenn Beck asserted by this Review is that he will not debate a progressive. A comment on Beck's website pointed to the following debate that took place last year before the first presidential debate in Denver. It's an hour long, but the exchange is interesting. Pay close attention to the topic of media, and see if you can detect the lies coming out of Beck's mouth.

Did you hear the lies? They were about 46 minutes into the debate. First, Beck is still misquoting Thomas Jefferson who never penned nor spoke the words "honest questioning." Beck made that up in his first book, and he continues to distort Jefferson's words. What Jefferson actually wrote in that letter was, "Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason, than that of blindfolded fear." The "homage of reason" is not in any way equivalent to "honest questioning." It's puzzling why Beck continues to use this faux quote since he never seems to question the existence of God.

fake cries and makes up "facts" to suit his false narratives

Beck is highly critical of NBC for their editing of the Zimmerman tape of the 911 call. However, Beck cherry-picks the information and therefore distorts the truth (as usual). The producer at NBC, who worked on the "Today" show segment that featured that tape was fired. That is what a news organization with journalistic ethics does when someone in the company violates those ethics. However, Beck is being a hypocrite (again) with his faux outrage at NBC because, as three bloggers noted, Beck edited a tape of Obama during a press conference in after the G-8 meeting in Canada in 2010 to deceive his viewers. It was not the first time during the election season last year that Beck told that lie, that he never edited tape of Obama

Still, this was an interesting debate. Spitzer used facts and figures while Beck pushed emotional buttons for the most past. It's too bad Spitzer did not consult a Beckologist before the debate. He could have nailed Mr. Beck for his continual deceptions and misinformation.

Glenn Beck, a troll

Home Disclaimer Contents For Glenn Beck Share This URL
Glenn Beck has been defined on this Review in several ways. He is a brilliant, reactionary, yellow propagandist. He is an unabashed liar and a hypocrite. He is a cult of personality and a fake populist. He may be a narcissist, and he may be a megalomaniac. During her show, Rachel Maddow came up with another label for people of his ilk and pointed to Mr. Beck specifically.

Listen to her make the case, via MSNBC:

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Do you doubt that Beck says things just to provoke, that he's a troll? Then consider the following list of gems from Mr. Beck and remove any doubt.

not likely that even he believes this nonsense
  • ''IF YOU LOG ONTO THIS (CARS.GOV) AT YOUR HOME, EVERYTHING IN YOUR HOME IS NOW THEIRS.''

—Glenn Beck, arguing that the Cash for Clunkers program was nothing more than a secret government plot to gain access over your computer, July 2009
  • ''I know the progressives are using progressive tactics. They're not using Nazi tactics. The real answer is the Nazis were using early American progressive tactics. And that's not my opinion, that's historic fact.''

—Glenn Beck, Fox News, Jan. 20, 2011
  • ''I am not saying that Barack Obama is a fascist. If I'm not mistaken, in the early days of Adolf Hitler, they were very happy to line up for help there as well. I mean, the companies were like, 'Hey, wait a minute. We can get, you know, we can get out of trouble here. They can help, et cetera, et cetera.'''

—Glenn Beck, comparing government bailouts of auto companies to actions of German companies during the rise of Hitler, Fox News' Glenn Beck show, April 1, 2009
  • ''This is a moment, quite honestly, that I think we reclaim the civil rights movement. It has been so distorted and so turned upside down because we must repair honor and integrity first, I tell you right now. We are on the right side of history. We are on the side of individual freedoms and liberties, and damn it, we will reclaim the civil rights moment. We will take that movement, because we were the people that did it in the first place. ''

—Glenn Beck, on his march on Washington, which he held on the anniversary of Martin Luther King's ''I Have a Dream'' speech, Fox News, May 26, 2010
  • ''You have three people in the White House that are in love with eugenics or whatever it is you would call it today. ... Please dear God, read history. Please dear God read the truth of what these people have said in their own words, and ask yourself this one question: Do you trust these people enough to give them control over who lives and who dies? Because that's what health care is when you have no other choice but to go to the state.''

—Glenn Beck, comparing health care reform to Nazi eugenics
  • ''Roosevelt...Am I wrong by saying there was a good portion of people that thought, 'Holy cow, I'm glad he's dead. He was turning into a dictator.'''

—Glenn Beck, on FDR, who was wildly popular after being elected four times, bringing America back from economic collapse, and leading the Allied powers to victory in World War II (May 21, 2010)
  • ''This is what Hitler did with the SS. He had his own people. He had the brownshirts and then the SS. This is what Saddam Hussein — so — but you are comparing that. And I — I mean, I think America would have a really hard time getting their arms around that.''

—Glenn Beck, claiming Obama's 'civilian national security force' is the same as what Hitler and Saddam Hussein did, Glenn Beck, FOX News' Glenn Beck show, Aug. 27, 2009
  • ''Every night I get down on my knees and pray that Dennis Kucinich will burst into flames.''

    —Glenn Beck, in 2003
  • ''When you see the effects of what they're doing to the economy, remember these words: We will survive. No -- we'll do better than survive, we will thrive. As long as these people are not in control. They are taking you to a place to be slaughtered!''

—Glenn Beck, on FOX News, Nov. 3, 2009
  • ''You got to have an enemy to fight. And when you have an enemy to fight, then you can unite the entire world behind you, and you seize power. That was Hitler's plan. His enemy: the Jew. Al Gore's enemy, the U.N.'s enemy: global warming. Then you get the scientists — eugenics. You get the scientists — global warming. Then you have to discredit the scientists who say, 'That's not right.' And you must silence all dissenting voices. That's what Hitler did.''

—Glenn Beck, linking Al Gore's campaign against global warming to Hitler's campaign against the Jews, 'The Glenn Beck Program,' April 30, 2007
  • ''So here you have Barack Obama going in and spending the money on embryonic stem cell research. ... Eugenics. In case you don't know what Eugenics led us to: the Final Solution. A master race! A perfect person. ... The stuff that we are facing is absolutely frightening.''

—Glenn Beck on his radio show, March 9, 2009
  • ''I want a chastity belt on this man. I want his every move watched in Washington. I don't trust this guy...This one could end with a dead intern. I'm just saying, it could end with a dead intern!''

—Glenn Beck, on Sen. Scott Brown saying his daughters are ''available'' during his election victory speech
  • ''This is fascism. This is what happens when you merge special interests, corporations, and the government. This is what happens. And if people like you don't take a stand...at some point, you know what poem keeps going through my mind is 'First they came for the Jews.' People, all of us are like, well, this news doesn't really affect me. Well, I'm not a bondholder. Well, I'm not in the banking industry. Well, I'm not a big CEO. Well, I'm not on Wall Street. Well, I'm not a car dealer. I'm not an autoworker. Gang, at some point they're going to come for you.''

—Glenn Beck, on closures of auto dealerships under the bankruptcy deals of GM and Chrysler, ''The Glenn Beck Program,'' June 10, 2009
One could go on and on with the absurd and provocative nonsense that Mr. Beck, quintessential troll, has spouted over the years. It worked to build up his audience, and it has made him rich. What kind of people listen to absurd nonsense like this -- and these quotations barely scratch the surface of Beck's ridiculous, false claims -- and take him seriously? Gullible, reactionary people who want these claims to be true don't seem to realize that Beck has entertainment value, and nothing more.

Beck's dog Victor

Home Disclaimer Contents For Glenn Beck Share This URL
Glenn Beck has been maintaining a link on his website entitled "Thank you Victor." For reasons obvious to some, who read this Review, that drew the attention of this blogger. It seems that his dog, Victor, was getting close to death in mid-December, and Beck is giving him a tribute as his devoted guard dog while distorting the story about why he obtained a German Shepard after the 9/11 attacks.

Victor

Via Beck's website:
It was right after 9/11 that I received my first death threat. It was from a Muslim extremist that said he would kill me and my whole family if I didn’t stop talking.
What Mr. Beck neglects to impart to his gullible and low-information audience is what he was saying in the aftermath of the attacks on the U.S. homeland by reactionary, militant Islamists. In his biography of Glenn Beck, after listening to old tapes of Mr. Beck on the radio, including right after 9/11, author Alex Zaitchik wrote(1) that Beck said, on the air:
We should absolutely release everything that we have. Let them see the fury of the United States when it is fully unleashed. You think we have enemies now? Wait until we take out Libya, Afghanistan, Palestine...Any [country] with ties to bin Laden I wouldn't mind turning into a giant glowing parking lot.
Two points here worth noting. 1) Glenn Beck is calling for genocide against entire nations which, putting it mildly, is pretty "extremist." If some ignorant radio blowhard called for the extermination of the people of the United States, many Americans would call in a death threats against him.  2) Beck has made a fortune on his ignorance which seems to be exceeded by that of his followers who believe the common nonsense he spews on a daily basis. In this case, he didn't mention Saudi Arabia from where most of the hijackers were from, and Palestinians, like Iraqis, had nothing to do with the attacks of 9/11.

Tears if a clown

Of course, Beck shed tears explaining to his audience that he was about to lose his dog. It is sad to lose a pet, but Beck cherry picked the facts regarding the reason why he obtained Victor, thereby deceiving his "addicted" followers yet again. This isn't news; the irony of "Thank you, Victor" was too delicious to pass on without comment.

Former Beck addict comes clean

Home Disclaimer Contents For Glenn Beck Share This URL
The following post is a complete re-write. It was a guest post by an anonymous, former supporter and "addict" of Glenn Beck. She has since decided that she did not want her story posted here, so this has been narrowed down to the Amtrak story Beck told on the air and a clip from his appearance on The View.

Beck the Ambushed "Victim"

 Via The Huffington Post:

Beck did not let go of this and continued discussing the issue on radio and TV, even demanding a "Damn Apology" from Barbara Walters. In the days that ensued “The View” debacle, Beck was unable to blow it off.  If it really was a matter of “he said, she said”, why was his teeth locked on this story like a bone?  He was caught on national TV lying through his teeth.

lying sack of dog mess

What other stories has Glenn so casually told that are not true? The average person would not feel hurt by a TV commentator caught embellishing a story; but to many people, Beck is more than a commentator, at a minimum he is a soothsayer and a man of God. Critics, on the other hand, recognize that Beck is nothing more than a false prophet making genuine profits off his follower's gullibility.
