The following is an email that went out today. Please take action to help fight
the reactionary direction of
Glenn Beck and
Rush Limbaugh. We need progress on climate change and conservation, not regress into the past.
If you had spent any time listening to Rush Limbaugh or Glenn Beck, you probably would’ve heard them railing against energy efficient light bulbs. Well, today, their allies in the U.S. House of Representatives are pushing legislation that would repeal important light bulb efficiency standards. Limbaugh and Beck have ridiculed new light bulb standards that save consumers money and reduce harmful pollution. Limbaugh has said energy efficient compact fluorescent bulbs are “dangerous,” while Beck has mocked these new standards as being part of a “nanny state” governance. Not surprisingly, Limbaugh and Beck are grossly distorting the truth about these standards, which were enacted in 2007 with strong bipartisan support. The standards will save consumers about $100 per family per year, or about $12 billion nationally, when fully implemented. Additionally, improving energy efficiency standards is one of the quickest, easiest and cheapest ways to reduce pollution that harms our public health, including emissions of mercury and carbon pollution. The standards will prevent more than 100 million tons of carbon pollution per year -- the equivalent of taking 17 million cars off the road. Limbaugh and Beck may have their followers in Congress -- willing to go along with whatever distortions and falsehoods they spout from the airwaves -- but lawmakers represent us, not them. We can’t let these outrageous attacks on common-sense energy efficiency standards go unchallenged. |
