what's to debunk?
Taking the example of Glenn Beck as a media pundit and propagandist, this timely and provocative book shows how mainstream media fails in its duty—and explains what the American people can do about it.
Glenn Beck is a controversial figure. He has regaled fans with conspiracy theories, declared progressivism a cancer, and denounced "social justice" as the path towards Communism, all while advocating "conservative libertarianism" and claiming to be on a mission from God to restore America to its founding principles. The question is, are media pundits like Beck saving America, or are they destroying its most basic values?
Debunking Glenn Beck: How to Save America from Media Pundits and Propagandists was written in response to Beck's Arguing with Idiots. Its most immediate concern is with exploring the agenda behind Beck's arguments and exposing the flaws in his reasoning. But this book's real mission is something much broader. Using Beck as an example, author Karl Rogers also shows why media reform is so vital to the future of democracy.
To make that case, Dr. Rogers offers a detailed discussion of the ideas and ideology at work in Beck's arguments, revealing how the well-known conservative pundit has distorted and twisted facts to misrepresent American history, the meaning of progressivism, and even the U.S. Constitution. The book examines topics ranging from the Second Amendment to health care, education, housing, the Supreme Court, unions, democracy, and government. It concludes by explaining how Americans can revitalize the Constitution as a living document and, by doing so, revitalize public debate and democracy itself.

What my book does is show how Beck's arguments are flawed, even if we accept his facts and take him seriously; while also viewing Beck as a symptom of what has gone wrong with mainstream media in America, and pointing out what Americans can do about it.

The purpose of the propaganda from the right, such as disseminated by Beck and others, is to further alienate the nationalistic conservative and libertarian rightwingers from any conception of good government in order to disavow any possibility of democracy. Hence all other media is misrepresented as "liberal", the federal government is misrepresented as being involved in some Marxist conspiracy, and corporatism is equated with freedom. The fact of the matter is that multinational corporations have taken over all three branches of the US government. They are transforming the Republic into a corporate-state. They have already defeated the Left Opposition; now they are defeating the Right Opposition. Beck et al are directing their propaganda against the conservative working and middle classes. They are deceiving them from the fact that they have been duped, in order to suppress any resistance from the armed proportion of the citizenry, which is the proportion that the corporatists are actually afraid of rising up in rebellion. Hence, the purpose of the propaganda is to misdirect the blame and encourage conservatives and libertarians to either vote Republican or stay out of political life altogether. "Go back to your churches, homes, and neighborhoods, because government is a lost cause and democratic participation is anarchism and mob-rule." That's the message.
